We know them as masked stock characters: the greedy old man, the sexy serving wench, the know-it-all-doctor, the lovesick lovers etc. As we look around our world, our stock characters have simply evolved: the corrupt president, the cougar, the man-child, the narcissistic child etc. Commedia is Dead! Long live Commedia!
Students investigate the human comedy, training in the trademarks of Commedia—articulate physicality combined with verbal wit, the art of ‘improviso’, and the play of appetites in stock characters and the skill of ensemble playing. Students delve unto both the realms of classical and contemporary Commedia, exploring political satire and bawdy wit.
